Die lateinische Ausgabe von Willem Janszoon und Joan Blaeu`s '''Theatrum orbis terrarum, sive, Atlas novus''' wurde in 4 Bänden veröffentlicht, die in 1645 beginnen. Die Erstausgabe dieses Atlasses wurde 1635 als ein zwei Bände-Satz auf Deutsch, Niederländisch, Latein, und Französisch veröffentlicht. Um 1662 war der Atlas auf 11 oder 12 Bände gewachsen, abhängig davon, ob man die Ausgabe eines Seeatlasses mit einschließt. An diesem Punkt wurde der Atlas bekannt als der '''Atlas maior'''. Diese Arbeit von Blaeus wird als Krönung auf dem Gebiet des Kartenzeichnens betrachtet.
