Im Jahre 793 ist es ein fränkischer [[Gau]] [[Friesland|Frieslands]].<br /> <br /> Aus ihm erwuchs bis ins Hochmittelalter ein friesisches, zur Reichsunmittelbarkeit strebendes Land mit eigenem Recht ([[Rüstringer Asegabuch]]) unter der losen Oberherrschaft der [[Grafschaft Oldenburg|Grafen von Oldenburg]]. <br /> <br /> Seit 1314 zerfiel es durch Landuntergang in zwei Teile östlich und westlich der Jade. Im westlichen Teil bildete sich seit dem 15. Jahrhundert die 1575 an Oldenburg fallende [[Herrschaft Jever]]. Der östliche Teil (Butjadingen.
